How to Apply for a Marriage License in New Jersey (NJ)
Planning your New Jersey wedding and ready to make it official? Before you can say "I do," you’ll need to secure a marriage license. Below are some FAQs regarding how to go about obtaining a marriage license. If you’re still unsure, don’t hesitate to call the municipality building!

Head to the Local Registrar’s Office municipality in which you and/or your fiancé reside. You both do not have to reside in that municipality.

You must apply for your marriage license in the municipality where you are getting married.
Out of state couple getting married at Rock Island— you will go to the Sparta, NJ municipality.

Your driver’s license or passport.
Proof of residency.
Social security number.
A witness (must be 18+).
$28 to pay for the application fee.
If you’ve previously been married, be prepared to provide your final divorce decree or the death certificate of your former spouse.

Two weeks out from your wedding date is the sweet spot.
Make sure there are appointments available.
You can apply as early as six months before your wedding date.
If you choose to apply this early, we suggest waiting until the week of your wedding to pick up the marriage license as it expires 30 days after issuance.
